The game of Video Poker begins when the player puts credits (whether it’s tokens, tickets or cash) into the machine and presses the deal button. A hand of five cards will then be "handed out" on the video screen.

For the cards the enthusiast would like to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons need to be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can decide to keep any amount of cards they want, whether it is all or none.

After the bettor has chosen which cards he or she would like to retain, they should press ‘deal’, at which point any fresh cards will be given out if desired. The round is now finished, with the Video Poker machine analyzing the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands printed on the pay out schedule.

Normally, the lowest winning hand on an Electronic Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money growing for each and every better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, moving on to two pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It definitely goes without saying that the payout schedule can change from game to game, so that knowledgeable bettors are agile enough to select the most money-making ones every time.

As soon as the first round has finished, the player can either decide to remain on and try to to maximize their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any money that might have been won. Further, several versions of the game give the gambler a chance to increase their wins, in which instance another game is played. There are also variations among specific machines, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other differing aspects to enhance playability.
