Video Poker is a beloved game that can be wagered on in casinos around the world, or alternatively at your house on your home computer, through a web connection. The regulations are very straightforward and involve the player trying to get the greatest mixture of cards possible in order to win cash. In this respect it’s much the same as a regular game of poker, minus the interaction with any other players. Of course, tactics used in a physical game of poker, such as tricking, will be irrelevant here.

The game of Electronic Poker starts when the player puts credits (either tokens, tickets or cash) into the machine and presses the play button. A hand of five cards will be "distributed" on the screen.

The Video Poker machine also has buttons with ‘hold’ printed on them, and players should now pick which cards to keep and which to discard. For the cards the gambler wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons should be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can choose to keep any amount of cards they want, from all to none.

After the gambler has chosen which cards he or she wishes to keep, the player will then press ‘draw’, which will mean that any fresh cards will be dealt if desired. The hand is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands listed in the pay out schedule.

Typically, the minimum winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money getting larger for each better hand. A common list of winning hands begins with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It goes without saying that the payment schedule can change from game to game, so that discerning gamblers are agile enough to select the most profitable machine each instance.

Once the first round has played out, the player can either choose to continue on and try to to increase their earnings, or they can press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any money that they may have won. Further, a few versions of the game allow the player an opportunity to increase their profits, in which situation a further round is played. There are also differences among individual machines, with some virtual decks including wild cards and other differing elements to enhance playability.
